Rug Size Guide – How to Choose the Right Carpet Size for Your Room

Quick Rules Before You Measure
- Leave a border of floor: in most rooms, leave about 1–1.5 ft of bare floor between the carpet and the walls.
- Bigger usually looks better: a carpet that is too small makes a room look cramped. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
- Mark it out first: use newspaper or masking tape on the floor to see how the size will look before you order.
Living Room Carpet Size

Tip: the front legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on the carpet. This ties the seating area together.
Bedroom Carpet Size

Tip: place the carpet under the lower two-thirds of the bed, so you step onto soft carpet when you get up.
Dining Room Carpet Size

| 8-seater (rectangular) | 9x12 ft |
| 4-seater (round, about 3.5–4 ft) | 6 ft or 7 ft round |

Tip: the carpet should extend about 2 ft beyond the table on every side, so chairs stay on the carpet when pulled out.
Hallway and Runner Size
- Choose a runner about 1–1.5 ft narrower than the hallway, so some floor shows on both sides.
- Leave about 1 ft of floor at each end of the hallway.
- Common runner sizes: 2x6 ft, 2.5x8 ft and 2.5x10 ft.
Round Carpet Size
- Reading corner or entryway: 4 ft or 5 ft round
- Under a round coffee table: 5 ft or 6 ft round
- Centre of a bedroom or kids' room: 6 ft or 7 ft round

- Measure the length and width of the room in feet.
- Subtract about 2–3 ft from each (for the floor border).
- Match the result to the nearest carpet size above, or ask us for a custom size.
