How to Choose the Right Rug Size (2026 Guide): Living Room, Bedroom & Dining Room

The most common rug mistake is buying one that is too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room makes the space look cramped, while the right size ties your furniture together and makes the room feel bigger and calmer.

3 Golden Rules of Rug Sizing

• Leave a border of bare floor. In most rooms, leave about 1–1.5 ft of floor between the rug and the walls.
• Go bigger if you are unsure. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. A small rug is the mistake people regret most.
• Anchor your furniture. The front legs of sofas, chairs and beds should rest on the rug so the furniture and rug work as one group.

How to Measure Your Room

1. Measure the length and width of the room in feet.
2. Subtract about 2–3 ft from each measurement to leave the floor border.
3. Match the result to the nearest rug size above it, or ask us for a custom size.
4. Before you order, mark the size on the floor with newspaper or masking tape and see how it looks.

Living Room Rug Size

Tip: the front legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on the rug. This ties the seating area together.

Bedroom Rug Size

Dining Room Rug Size

Tip: the rug should extend about 2 ft beyond the table on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when you pull them out.

Hallway and Runner Size

• Choose a runner about 1–1.5 ft narrower than the hallway, so some floor shows on both sides.
• Leave about 1 ft of floor at each end of the hallway.
• Common runner sizes: 2x6 ft, 2.5x8 ft and 2.5x10 ft.

Round Rug Size

• Reading corner or entryway: 4 ft or 5 ft round
• Under a round coffee table: 5 ft or 6 ft round
• Centre of a bedroom or kids' room: 6 ft or 7 ft round

5 Common Rug Size Mistakes

• Buying too small. A rug that only sits under the coffee table makes the seating area look disconnected.
• Covering the whole floor. Without a border of bare floor, a rug looks like wall-to-wall carpet instead of a design piece.
• Ignoring the furniture. Always check where the legs of the sofa, chairs and bed will fall.
• Forgetting the doors. Make sure doors can open over the rug without catching.
• Skipping the tape test. Mark the rug size on the floor first; it takes two minutes and saves a costly mistake.

What is the most common rug size for a living room?
5x8 ft and 6x9 ft are the most common sizes for a 3-seater or 3+2 sofa set. For an L-shaped sofa, 8x10 ft or 9x12 ft usually works better.

Should a rug go under all the furniture legs?
Not necessarily. At least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should rest on the rug. In a large room you can put all the legs on it.

How much floor should I leave around the rug?
