When you shop for a rug in India, the label often says just "wool" or "premium material". That tells you very little. The type of wool decides how soft the rug feels, how it wears, and how long it stays looking good.
At Carpet Emporio, our hand tufted rugs, hand knotted rugs and dhurries are made in New Zealand wool. In this guide you'll learn what a New Zealand wool rug is, why it is worth choosing, how it compares with other materials, and how to care for it.
What Is a New Zealand Wool Rug?
A New Zealand wool rug uses yarn spun from wool grown in New Zealand. The wool is cleaned, spun into yarn, dyed, and then made into a rug in one of three ways:
- Hand tufted: yarn is punched through a cloth backing with a tufting gun, then carved by hand.
- Hand knotted: every knot is tied by hand onto a foundation.
- Flatweave (dhurrie): the yarn is woven flat, with no pile.
All three constructions can use New Zealand wool. To understand the difference between the first two, read our guide to hand tufted vs hand knotted carpets.
Why Choose New Zealand Wool?
- Soft, comfortable feel. New Zealand wool is known for a soft, springy handle that feels good under bare feet.
- Strong, long-lasting fibre. Wool fibres bounce back after footsteps and furniture, so a dense wool pile keeps its shape for years.
- Rich, even colour. Wool takes dye well, so colours look deep and full instead of flat.
- A natural fibre. A wool rug is a natural product that feels warm in winter and comfortable through the year.
- Easy to care for. Regular vacuuming and quick spill care keep a wool rug looking fresh. See our carpet care guide.
New Zealand Wool vs Other Rug Materials
| Material | Feel | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand wool | Soft, springy, dense | Natural fibre. Some shedding in the first weeks is normal. |
| Wool & viscose | Wool softness with a gentle sheen | Viscose adds shine, but needs more careful cleaning. Keep it away from water. |
| Microfiber polyester | Very soft, plush | Used in our shaggy rugs. A soft, affordable choice. |
| Polypropylene | Light, smooth | Used in our Janamaz carpets for masjids and prayer halls. |

How to Judge the Quality of a Wool Rug
- Ask exactly what the material is. "Wool" or "blend" is not enough. A good seller states the fibre, such as "New Zealand wool", on the product page.
- Check the pile. It should feel dense and springy, and spring back when you press it.
- Look at the colours. They should look deep and even, with clean lines between colours.
- Look at the back. The stitching or knots should be even, with no bare patches.
- Ask about size and colour. A maker can change both for you. See our custom rugs page.
Caring for a New Zealand Wool Rug
- Vacuum once or twice a week with the beater bar off.
- Some loose fibre in the first few weeks is normal for a new wool rug and settles with regular vacuuming.
- Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth; don't rub.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly.
- Never soak or machine-wash a wool rug; use a professional cleaner for deep stains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a New Zealand wool rug worth the price?
Wool costs more than synthetic pile, but it feels softer, keeps its shape and lasts for years with regular care. That is why many people prefer it for living rooms and bedrooms.
Are all your rugs made of New Zealand wool?
Our hand tufted, hand knotted and dhurrie rugs are made in New Zealand wool. Some hand tufted designs blend wool with viscose, and the product page says so. Shaggy rugs are microfiber polyester, and Janamaz carpets are polypropylene.
Does a wool rug shed?
A little loose fibre in the first few weeks is normal and settles with regular vacuuming.
Is wool good for a bedroom?
Yes. Wool feels soft and warm underfoot, which is why it is a popular choice beside the bed. See our bedroom rug guide.
Can I get a wool rug in my own size and colour?
Yes. Every design can be made in your own size and colours. Share your room size or colour reference on WhatsApp and we will send a quote. Use our Rug Size Guide if you are unsure of the size.
How long does delivery take, and can I return a rug?
Shipping is free across India. Ready-to-ship sizes arrive in about 12–15 days and made-to-order sizes in about 25–35 days. Standard-size rugs can be returned or exchanged within 10 days of delivery; custom orders cannot. See our Return & Refund Policy.
