A hand tufted wool rug is the most popular choice for Indian living rooms and bedrooms. It gives you the soft, dense feel of a wool carpet at a much lower price than a hand knotted rug, and it comes in almost any design, colour and size.
We have been making carpets in Bhadohi since 1964. In this guide you'll learn what makes a good hand tufted wool rug, how to choose the right one for your room, and 10 of our favourite designs, from traditional medallions to modern colour-block and irregular shapes.
What Is a Hand Tufted Wool Rug?
A hand tufted rug is made by punching wool yarn through a stretched cloth backing with a hand-held tufting gun, following a pattern drawn on the cloth. A layer of latex holds the yarn in place, and a fabric backing is added on the underside. The pile is then trimmed and carved by hand, which gives sharp edges and fine detail.
Because tufting is much faster than knotting, a hand tufted rug costs less than a hand knotted one and can be made in any size. Want to compare the two? Read our guide to hand tufted vs hand knotted carpets.
Why Choose Wool?
- Soft and warm underfoot. Wool has a natural spring that makes a rug feel plush and cosy.
- Long-lasting. Dense wool pile bounces back from footsteps and furniture better than most synthetic pile.
- Rich colour. Wool takes dye well, so colours look deep and full.
- Easy to keep clean. Regular vacuuming and quick spot-cleaning keep a wool rug looking fresh. See our carpet care guide.
Many of our hand tufted rugs are made in New Zealand wool, which is known for its soft, dense pile. The material for each rug is listed on its product page.
How to Choose a Hand Tufted Wool Rug
- Start with the size. In a living room, the rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. For most living rooms a 5x8 ft or 6x9 ft rug works well. See our Rug Size Guide.
- Pick the pattern for your room. Plain or tonal designs keep a busy room calm; bold patterns work best with plain furniture.
- Repeat one colour from the room. A shade from your sofa, curtains or cushions helps the rug feel connected.
- Think about the shape. Rectangles suit most rooms; round rugs work well under a round table or in a reading corner, and irregular shapes make a statement piece.
- Match the rug to your lifestyle. A darker or patterned rug hides marks better than a pale plain one.
- Ask for custom. Any design can be made in your own size and colours. See our custom rugs page.

Caring for a Hand Tufted Wool Rug
- Vacuum once or twice a week with the beater bar off.
- Some loose fibre in the first few weeks is normal and settles with regular vacuuming.
- Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth; don't rub.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly.
- Use a professional cleaner for deep stains; never soak or steam-clean a hand tufted rug.
